How autonomous is ProsperOps?

This is one of ProsperOps’ strongest differentiators.

ProsperOps is designed to operate automatically rather than requiring customers to approve every individual commitment transaction. Its operating model uses customer-defined controls while the platform continuously adjusts optimization decisions as usage changes. 

ProsperOps also describes its rate optimization as continuously managing coverage across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud.
The model is essentially:
Set policy → ProsperOps executes → the portfolio adapts continuously.
For a large cloud environment, that can eliminate a significant amount of repetitive FinOps work.

It does not mean the platform is completely unconstrained. ProsperOps provides configurable settings around commitment strategy, and its pricing documentation describes controls around commitment targets and prepayment preferences.

The trade-off is straightforward: Autonomy is valuable when the goal is to remove manual execution.
Organizations that require procurement or finance approval for each individual commitment transaction may prefer a more approval-driven workflow.

How does ProsperOps manage commitment risk?

ProsperOps does not simply try to maximize commitment coverage. Its strategy is designed to balance savings against the possibility that future usage will fall. 

ProsperOps’ documented controls allow customers to establish a Base Target and configure how the platform should handle changes in consumption. The flexible layer can then address usage above that baseline.

That is sophisticated commitment management.

The ProsperOps materials reviewed describe risk mitigation through optimization. We did not identify a separate ProsperOps cashback or reimbursement mechanism for eligible commitment underutilization.

That does not mean ProsperOps doesn’t manage risk. It means the mechanism is different.

ProsperOps pricing: what does it actually cost?

ProsperOps does not price Autonomous Discount Management as a conventional SaaS subscription based on cloud spend. Its Savings Share model ties the ProsperOps charge directly to the savings generated by the service. 

ProsperOps says the charge is calculated from dollar savings across different categories, including Inherited, Base, Flex, and Smart Savings, depending on the cloud and discount instruments involved.

That distinction matters. A percentage-of-cloud-spend fee would increase simply because your cloud environment gets larger. With Savings Share, the vendor’s charge is instead tied to the savings it calculates from the discount instruments it manages or optimizes.

For example, on AWS, ProsperOps defines Flex Savings as monthly savings from Convertible Reserved Instances that ProsperOps purchased or optimized, while Base Savings can include savings from Savings Plans and certain inherited or customer-procured Reserved Instances. 

On Google Cloud, its calculation includes savings from customer-procured CUDs as well as ProsperOps-managed CUDs.

What does that mean for buyers?

The right metric is net savings after ProsperOps’ fee, not the gross savings number. If ProsperOps generates $1 million in savings, the economic question isn’t simply: “Did ProsperOps save us $1 million?”

It is “How much of that $1 million remains with us after the Savings Share?”

ProsperOps says that, with a term commitment, it offers tiered pricing intended to provide scalable economics as savings increase.

That makes the pricing model potentially attractive for large environments where the incremental savings substantially exceed the vendor’s fee.
Procurement teams should model the actual economics using their own commitment portfolio rather than relying on a headline savings percentage.

The exit economics matter, too

There is another pricing consideration that is easy to miss when evaluating ProsperOps.

If a customer terminates, ProsperOps says it immediately bills the Savings Share applicable to services provided month-to-date. 

More importantly, if the customer leaves before the end of a ProsperOps-managed discount instrument, unrealized Savings Share charges can apply to the remaining term, subject to a maximum of 12 months.

ProsperOps explains that these estimated unrealized fees apply to commitments deployed in its Flex and Smart layers.

For example, ProsperOps gives the scenario of a 12-month commitment with six months remaining when the customer terminates. The customer continues to receive the savings benefit from that commitment, and ProsperOps charges the corresponding estimated unrealized Savings Share for the remaining period.

Before signing, a procurement team should ask ProsperOps to model:

expected annual gross savings;

Savings Share at the expected savings level;

net savings after fees;

the effect of higher or lower cloud usage;

and the potential unrealized Savings Share if the relationship ends before managed commitments expire.
